Cheese and more cheese – so you are an ardent fan of cheese! Then it is most likely that you will store different types of cheese varieties in your house. While the block and hard cheese can be frizzed easily, the softer varieties like goat cheese or brie can become little grainy once frozen. So, you should know how to store cheese without any trouble.
Store Cheese – First Step
After bringing the cheese from the store, cut it out from its vacuum sealed pack as it makes the cheese suffocated. Now, take a smell of the cheese, or you can have a bit too. Are you getting a chemical flavor? Then it is better to use a knife and scrape off the top surface to get rid of the chemical. Have you brought the cheese from cheesemonger or deli? Then you do not need to do this as they come covered in a cheese paper or wax paper.
Store Cheese – Second Step
It is always better to use the parchment paper or cheese paper for wrapping the cheese before storing it. You can also use wax paper for this purpose. It helps to keep the texture and taste of the cheese intact. Before cutting the paper, make sure it is of proper size. Otherwise, it can’t wrap the cheese completely.
Third Step Of Storing Cheese
This step is necessary. So, you should not forget it ever. Take a parchment marker and write the date of packaging along with the date of expiry on the package. Moreover, you should also write the type of cheese you are storing. For example, if you have cheddar, parmesan, and Swiss variety, make sure each is marked properly. Otherwise, you can’t know which one to use at the time of need.
Now take the cheese covered in paper and wrap it in plastic. It provides extra protection to the cheese. Thus, it can’t absorb the different flavors present in the fridge. Make sure not a single portion of cheese is open. Don’t you have a plastic wrap? No problem as you can use a plastic bag that you can seal. Wrapping the cheese directly in plastic wrap should be avoided wholly as this help the bacteria grow fast. Besides, the chemicals of the plastic react with the cheese.
Fifth Step Of Storing
It is mandatory to keep the cheese in the drawer in the fridge, not on the shelf. This is because drawers are warmer and have high humidity than on the shelf. Thus, the cheese will not become dry. Harder variety of cheese will stay in excellent condition than the softer cheese. If, by chance, you feel any odor or change in the texture of the cheese, it is better to throw it out.
If there is some mold on the cheese, it is alright as you can scrape the top layer without any problem. But if the mold turns blackish or it has a bad smell, you should not use that cheese. In case the drawer of the fridge is full, keep the cheese in a glass bowl and then put it in the refrigerator.
