How To Freeze Cheese

How To Freeze Cheese: 3 Useful Ways

There are varieties of cheese available in the store, some of which are suitable to keep in the freezer. But you can freeze the cheese for a minimum of 2 months and a maximum of 6 months, though you can face some trouble. Before freezing them, you need to close the packet correctly. If the cheese is grated, then put it into the airtight box and then within the freezer.

Keep in mind that the deli block cheese is ideal for freezing while the artisanal cheese or the moist varieties are not suitable at all. The texture can be a little grainy, but there will be no difference in the taste of the frozen cheese. Thus, the frozen cheese will be more suitable for adding in the melted form in any recipe or a crumbling topping.

Freeze Cheese Blocks

  • If you have large blocks of cheese, it is better to cut it into slices to freeze and thaw quickly.
  • Take a plastic wrap and cover the cheese slices with it. You can also keep the cheese slices within the plastic bag with the attached zip at the top. Make sure to eliminate as much air as you can from the bag to avoid freezer burn. Now put it into the freezer bag for extra protection. Make sure that the packaging should be resistant to moisture.
  • Before putting in the freezer, do not forget to write the date of packaging as well as an expiration on it so that you can use it safely within the correct time.

Keeping Grated Cheese In The Freezer

If you are willing to use grated cheese in your recipes, take a food processor or cheese knife to grate or slice the cheese. Then pack it in an airtight plastic bag and write the date of packaging and expiry on it before freezing. You can also buy shredded cheese from the store and keep it in the freezer. Make sure that it comes with the exact date of packaging and expiry. Moreover, if you have bought different varieties of cheese, write the name of cheese on the packet too.

One thing you should not forget while freezing the sliced cheese is to place a piece of parchment paper in between each slice. This way, whenever you need it, you can take a slice out quickly. If you do not use the parchment paper, the slices will stick to one another.

Which Variety You Can Freeze?

Deli provides many types of cheese blocks like cheddar, Colby jack, mozzarella with a low amount of moisture, and also provolone. These varieties can be frozen without any trouble. They melt very quickly. Thus, you should use them in your dish as soon as you thaw them.

The aged cheese like parmesan, pecorino, blue cheese as well as asiago can be kept within the freezer in grated form or thin slices. When you thaw them, their texture becomes crumbly. These aged varieties stay at room temperature for at least four months. So, you might not need to freeze them. Soft and natural cheese like brie gets a grainy and watery texture if frozen.
